You Don’t Need More Time — You Need Less Noise

How many times have you said, “If I just had more time, I’d finally get it together”? You don’t need more time, you need less noise.
Having More Time Is Not The Solution
When your head is clear and free from distraction you have more time to think and to make a plan.
It is all the distractions that prevent us from cleaning out the closet, start that project, or just catch your breath.
When I have a deadline I put blinders on and get the job done in record time. Why is this? I have no choice. I can’t afford the distractions such as checking emails and scrolling social media.
Mental noise is the reason I walk into a room and forget why I went there. It’s the reason you keep scrolling past the things you say matter to you. It’s why even with a to-do list and a decent night’s sleep, you still feel scattered.
For some reason we are living in a world that rewards urgency and constant input. Every time you try to slow down, there’s a voice in your head whispering, “You should be doing something right now.”
This is the clutter nobody talks about—the kind that isn’t in your closet, but in your mind.
This is like having a mental junk drawer in your head! It’s full of half-finished thoughts, undone decisions, low-grade anxiety, and random emotional residue.
It’s the background hum of self-doubt, the noise of other people’s expectations, the list of things you should’ve done last week.
I learned years ago to lose the ‘shoulda, coulda, and woulda words.

Because clarity doesn’t come from adding more.
Clarity comes when we remove things. In my world, with the exception of cash and cookies, less is more in. And no amount of fancy planners, productivity hacks, or extra hours in the day is going to fix that.
That’s where The MindSketch Way begins. If you have been putting off decluttering your basement or procrastinating looking for a new job, what it is – the idea is to slow everything down. Way down. And then…and here is the uncomfortable part – slow down.
I ask people to pick up a pen and start with one line. One thought. One moment of attention.
Because what I’ve learned, both from my own life and all the conversations with people stuck in overwhelm, is that you can’t organize chaos. You have to quiet it first.
Drawing lines, even aimless ones, gives your brain a job that doesn’t involve fixing or deciding. It pulls your mind into the present moment, where the noise can finally start to fade.

Living In The Present Is A Solution
When you are in the present moment you are focused. When I first started these exercises it was wicked hard to keep myself focused. Thoughts about what I ‘should be’ doing wanted to creep in. I had to keep pushing the thoughts away.
With practice writing with no filter gives shape to thoughts that have been bouncing around for weeks. Suddenly, what felt like a tangled mess starts to make sense.

Here’s what this looks like in real life: Let’s use decluttering your home as an example.
Say you can’t make a single decision about what to keep or toss in your home. You’ve been circling around the same piles for months. You think the problem is procrastination.
We start with a MindSketch practice. No organizing tips. No time management advice. Just a pen, paper, and a willingness to slow down.
By the end of one drawing and a few honest sentences on the page, the story underneath the stuff starts to emerge. Maybe it’s guilt. Or is it perfectionism? Grief is another common stressor. Usually, it’s a mix of all three.
Now you have something real to work with—not just a list of things to do, but a truth to hold.
This is why I get a little spicy when people roll their eyes at the idea of drawing lines and writing down their thoughts. They’re looking for a quick fix. They want a life reset, but they’re still treating it like a closet cleanout.
If it were just about having more time, we’d all be thriving. But we’re not.
Mental Noise Is The Problem
We’re spinning because we’re overloaded with mental noise and under-supported in how to deal with it.

MindSketch Lab is where I teach people to turn the volume down. We draw to reveal what’s beneath the static. Journaling works because we are focused on writing the words. We name what’s going on so we’re not at the mercy of it anymore.
And here’s the best part, once the noise quiets, decisions get easier. Energy comes back. You don’t have to force motivation because you’re not dragging a hundred hidden stressors behind you.
You stop chasing more time and start making use of the time you already have. Because now your head is clear. That’s the win.
You want someone like me for a teacher because I have been there and done that and have the t-shirts to prove it! I used to be so all over the place it is amazing I got so much done!
Look At Your Mind
If you’ve been telling yourself that more time is the answer, I want you to try something different this week. Don’t look at your schedule. Look at your mind.

Grab a pen. Draw a line that represents how your thoughts feel today.
Loop it. Scribble it. Break it.
Then soften the sharp edges.
Notice what comes up.
Write a few words about what you saw.
That’s the practice. That’s the beginning.
You don’t need to be an artist or understand how it works. You just need to show up to the page with honesty.
Because the real clutter isn’t in your calendar.
It’s in your head.
And clearing it starts here.
